Minding My Zs and Qs

OK, wrong game, but the closest I had in the image files.
Monopoly. Thanksgiving 2005.

Flannery was way ahead in this game. (Scrabble). Bennie and Oakley threw in their tiles. "You win," they said in sad capitulation. I was ready to follow suit, but Flannery simply adores playing to the bitter end, especially when she's a clear winner. Being a dutiful mom, I decided to see us through to the end of play. Mistake.

It was my turn to empty the last two letters from the little felt pouch. And wouldn't you know what tumbled out? I got Z. I got Q. Ordinarily I treasure these premium letters. They're worth 10 points apiece. But when you have next to no vowels, and there are no remaining tiles to draw, the words keep diminishing in length thanks to the dwindling number of tiles. There's just no place to play anything, let alone Z and Q. And at the end of the game, the points of the tiles lingering on your rack are subtracted from your score and added to your opponent's. A double whammy of defeat. Curtains.

I began to resort to pathetic two-letter words like "ef," the phonetic spelling of the letter "F." (Yes, that's allowed.) There's something so cold and detached and Cartesian about spelling out one letter with two letters. It feels twice-removed from reality. Wasteful. And you get only two miserable points. I wandered into the kitchen and devoured a sorrowful spoonful of Cherry Garcia right out of the carton. Out on the arroyo a coyote howled and pounced on its prey. Every carnivore between here and Highway 285 howled. "YOUR TURN MOM!" Flan's voice was annoyingly sweet. I imagined her eyes gleaming in anticipation. She was into the kill.

I wandered half-heartedly back to the Scrabble table. Now my opponent had gotten really fortunate. She 'd gotten rid of two letters. Her last two letters. I and L. Clearly, my verbal prowess was plummeting in my dotage. I was outshone by a whippersnapper. Oh my God, I had just actually thought the term whippersnapper in reference to my firstborn. I was thinking like a geezer. I felt ill.

ILL. Flan had attached her I and L to the L of my GLADE, spelling ILL. What?? I took off my glasses, cleaned them, and put them back on. There it was--floating before my eyes--Flan's I was completely unattached!

In a frenzy, I pounced. I played my Q, my U--hoping against hope, I had refrained from making TUB a couple of moves earlier, knowing I'd need U to accompany Q if any miracle opportunity presented itself--and my Z. I made QUIZ! The Q was a double letter and the whole thing was a double word. I racked up 64 points in my last turn, seizing victory from Flannery's ILL. Talk about ILL-gotten gains!!!!!

I wasn't ready for geezerdom just yet. I was HOT.

I was so dazed by it all, when I went upstairs for bed, I felt compelled to run back down to Flannery's room and say, "You knew I had that Q and Z. You deliberately put down that I so your old mother could win, didn't you?? You felt sorry for me."

She took my hand and said, "Mom, I wish I were that nice."

Flannery with her new Scrabble coach, Dr. Nola Fay Merideth-Jones.
I'm a grandmother (kind of).

What a lovely post, San. I have a lot of happy memories of Scrabble time. This is like them. What a great game--and what a great daughter!

You are a born story-teller. I loved this. And Flan's new Scrabble coach looks just like my Miss Magnolia, way back when she was just a babe. (Also a Jones.)

Sandy, somehow I figured you'd be a Scrabbler. And a family Scrabbler at that.

Thank you, Debi. I haven't met the coach in person. Yet. Tonight probably. Can't wait!

Congratulations on your awesome win and your new grandkitty. A good reminder that it ain't over til it's over. I love scrabble. Assisted by Played Monopoly with my young next door neighbor this week. Assisted by Angel kitty, she massacred me. I beat her at Clue, though. I almost always win Clue. Scrabble is such a good game. Just this morning I was thinking that it might be good to replace the one I lost when I moved.

While I am not a game player at all, but you sure weave a great story about the joys of it all! Okay, I suppose I know I will never win at scrabble since I can't spell (I adore spell check)! You have wonderful children...and a cute grandchild, too!

Thanks San!

sukipoet said...

Great story. I'm a scrabble nut too when someone is around to play. Just love the new scrabble coach too. the photo shows how much you and your son resemble each other.

I very rarely win at Scrabble, though I enjoy playing it. I almost never win at Monopoly because the dice are loaded against me. You, dear San, will not play Chess because I've regaled you with my European victories of years gone by and you are afraid that I will checkmate you good! And yes, you are hot and will be hot when you join me in the Hot Tub!

...That's the truth.

OH! The scrabble wars through the ages at our house!
Started when we were timing labor pains, waiting till it was time to go to the hospital,,,,and we're still waging those battles to this day, with that same baby playing!
We had to invest in a timer, as some,,,, (read father-in-law) were so intent on winning that they would hold up the game, planning their strategy.
It's a great family story San,complete with gorgeous kids,,thanks for the memories!
And congrats on being a new Grandmother,,,nothing quite like it!
Also congrats on your husband,,,super comment!

ya know, i was rooting for you to find an empty "i" just so you could make the word "qi." i love scrabble. and i smiled at you showing the whipper snapper you still have spunk. ;)

No geezerdom for you!

Let us know when Flannery's Scrabble coach has Flannery entering the Scrabbolympics. Until then, you RULE!

I'm just stopping by to let you know there's an award waiting for you on my blog.

I'll come back when I have more time to properly appreciate your post. :-)

Anonymous said...

A. almost always wins the (usually all geezer) Scrabble wars at our house (I've only won once and I can't believe I'm sharing that). Having grown up playing it with his mom in English AND in French, he's a master of Scrabble strategy. Like wilsonart, we have to pull out the timer for my mom, who will ponder her strategy as long as we'll let her. We've learned not to be nice to her in Scrabble: she's just faking us out. BTW, have you noticed that Flan's Scrabble coach's ears seem to be bigger than hers? xoxoxo

That is a lovely post of family togetherness. How we treasure those moments. I don't think Flannery would sort of insult your intelligence so to speak as to make it easy for you. It was a genuine competitive game with the love right in the middle. That's how I like it. It's how it is with us.

Great post San. Love the mother in you. Your love shines through.

I have a new blog. Would you pop over and see it sometime? There's a story on it... and other stuff. Thanks.

That's a beautiful post, San, full of fun and games and lovely family support and interaction. Thank you for blessing us by sharing it.

Congratulations on winning! And on the new grandkitten. LOL That baby is so cute. Does she travel well and get energetic exploring Grandma's house?

I'm still playing scrabble online with Sandi but now we are using Pogo.com. She beats me regularly. I've never seen anyone make as many bingo's as she does. :)

Hugs!

Excellent family! Gracious in both victory and defeat!

P.S. Dr. Nola looks just like our gal Friday. The only difference is that Friday thinks biting is a sign of affection, and will not be cuddled without pain!

San - My son and I love playing Scrabble. We actually bought the Deluxe edition to make it easier for all players. I was thinking about getting the onyx version, too. I need to look at my Scrabble dictionary, though, because I don't know all those little useful words that are "legal" for the game. That usually leaves me with a few useless letters.

Peace - D

Some of my fondest memories with my two kiddos are of playing board games and the "friendly" competition. It might be time to have a rousing game sometime very soon . . . we'll maybe when it snows. Right now the weather is to beautiful to be inside!

Sandi McBride said...

I LOVE SCRABBLE. In fact you could say I have an addiction to it. And I see Flan's little coach is a near double of my Hound! Hound makes a poor coach tho, she'd rather play with the letters than whisper words in my ear!

Scrabble is another game I really wish I had here but have so far been unable to find. The Toys R Us in Narita used to stock it, but stupid me...I missed my chance before the popularity of things foreign plunged.

Oh, Zuiq!!!!!!

Sparkling Red said...

Nice work! Those last-minute plays always make me want to set off some fireworks. Once I got "Quill" on a triple word score for my last turn. That was Tha Best!

San said...

Raven, given the knack you have for putting together those Wordzzles, I'm not at all surprised you always win at Clue. I'm decent at it, but Flan is a wizard at that too. I'm in the same Monopoly boat as you, the sinking one.

San said...

Kim, I grew up playing those board games and I do associate them with fun family times. When it comes to spelling, I'm pretty good. But do not ask me for directions--I'm lost in space. I always pity the tourists who wander into the gallery and ask my advice on how to get to places. Lord knows where they wind up.

San said...

Suki, I'm really pleased you notice the resemblance between Oaks and me. In person he and his dad look A LOT alike, but he often reminds me of some of my male relatives too. I would have figured you to be a Scrabble nut.

San said...

Bennie, I do not believe I have ever won at Monopoly when I've played our family. You guys have a monopoly on the success! And no, I will not be slaughtered at chess.

It's the night after the harvest moon tonight. Should be beautiful. Hot tub under the stars?

xoxo

San said...

Babs, I'm glad you noticed Bennie's comment. Yes, it did make me grin. He of course was the giver of that hilarious Al Gore birthday card. It's one of those musical ones. When you open it, it plays Donna Summers singing "Hot Stuff." Remember that disco hit?

I've never heard of anyone playing Scrabble during labor. It makes a lot of sense, however. When I was pregnant, I attended Lamaze classes for natural childbirth. You could patent the Scrabble technique. As the words grow shorter, the pains grow closer together. When you hit the triple word score, you know it's time.

San said...

Michelle, "qi"--that's a great Scrabble word, probably the only one using q not followed by u. I would be afraid to play you. Shudder.

San said...

Carol, that's a memory from a while back. Flan has probably beat me since. I know she has at Monopoly. Last time we played she bought the Trump Tower and had it moved to Baltic Avenue. The neighborhood gentrified overnight and the rents skyrocketed.

San said...

Spark--an award? For me???

WOO HOO!!!

San said...

b2--long time, no hear! WOW. I'm glad you warned me about A. If I'm ever in a position to play him, I'll be prepared. And your mother--she is just the type of gentle, wily Southern lady who is happy to politely massacre all who stand in her way.

Dr. Nola's ears are largish as that. I met her last night. She is adorable!

xoxoxo

San said...

Cath, I'm glad you see the love in the middle of our Scrabble board. You would understand that.

And thank you for the heads-up on the happenings at your place. Can't wait to read!

San said...

Lee, I met Dr. Nola Faye Merideth-Jones for the first time last night. She lives up to her name too! The lovely picture of Flan and her "coach" was taken by Flan's boyfriend and emailed to me. The Scrabble incident occurred a while back.

I would imagine Sandi would be a fierce opponent, but you're not exactly a word wimp yourself.

HUG.

San said...

Fe, thank you for your (always) gracious comments.

Bites are hard to take, but Friday must be irresistible nonetheless. She must be kin to Nola Faye.

San said...

Doris, I know what you mean about those odd little legal words. I'm memorizing them, slowly. I nonetheless keep being tempted to throw out equally odd, illegal words.

San said...

Todd, hasn't this weather been just glorious? We missed the harvest moon last night, since we were attending an Oaks event at UNM, but even the nights have been ever so perfect of late.

San said...

Ellie, I can really see you girls playing Scrabble with your mom. And I'll bet you all had the winning instinct too!

Last night I met Dr. Nola Faye and she is even more precious in person. PUUUURRRR.

San said...

Julie, that's one way to make a BIG impression on the in-laws.

San said...

Sandi, Lee advises me you are a fierce opponent. I'm not surprised.

Hound is oddly named (in a GOOD way).

Hugs to you...

San said...

Moody, why don't you ask for a Scrabble game for Christmas from your relatives back home? You don't want to lose your edge.

So the Japanese have lost their fascination for things foreign? I'll never forget selling one of my husband's clocks to a couple of young Japanese women quite a few years ago. They were wearing Micky Mouse watches and said the clock was so "American." But you know, come to think of it, we do see less of that now.

I hope the aches and pains are minimal. Enjoy the togetherness. And maybe a Scrabble game.

Shrinky said...

Awwww, you and your daughter both have grace!

Yes, the urge to win is a potent mistress - I soooooo understand this! We took our scrabble board along to Greece, sat in the shade and, in between Gin and tonics, dueled it out. The children occasionally joined in, but it was mainly left to us geriatrics.

Perhaps it was the alcoholic lubrication that loosened the rules? When either one of us couldn't play we invented a word, but only at the cost of paying a penalty, as well as coming up with a plausible, nay convincing, definition of what it meant.

I haven't laughed so much in years! (And no, I'm NOT mentioning the penalties..but suffice it to say, I won every single game.)

Grin.

San said...

Well, JS, I can't imagine a better reason to play.

San said...

Jeff, that's exactly how I feel when I play Monopoly. I want to knock everyone's hotels off the board and say it was an act of God. Everyone ELSE's hotels I mean.

San said...

Shrinky, those are GOOD rules. We will have to try that. Please, please, please write a post about the penalties. ;-) Or not.

Hi San,
I started to laugh deeply when I read this: "Oh my God, I had just actually thought the term whippersnapper in reference to my firstborn. I was thinking like a geezer. I felt ill."

I chuckled deeply, then I gasped --

"ILL. Flan had attached her I and L to the L of my GLADE, spelling ILL".

Then you checkmated her with QUIZ. What a clincher!! An amazing game of Scrabble.

You and Flannery are a lot alike. :-)

Meg Wolff said...

p.s. I'm remembering those words ... ILL, QUIZ & QUILL.

Fun post, Your Caliente-tude.

What struck me as interesting the first time I read this was your focus on the Q and Z, problematic to be sure, but the U is not mentioned until later, even though it was going to be your salvation with your Q, at the very least. There's the lovely parable of it ain't over till it's over, but there's also the parable of the gift being in hand, even as we fret over something else that our minds have wandered to.

Q it Up. You iZ HOT.

San said...

Meg, thank you for following the game so closely. It WAS a game of wonder.

And you're right. Flan and I do have many things in common.

San said...

And Meg, Lee has provided another Q word courtesy of JS, and it doesn't even need a U after it--QAT. One to put away for a rainy Scrabble day.

San said...

Paschal, that's a good point. I was of course holding onto the U, knowing I'd most likely need it provided I draw a Q, hoping, hoping, hoping for a Q. Then when the desired gift, the Q, arrived, I scorned its timing. Lessons learned. Blessings counted.

Amen.

San said...

Lori, now I'm curious about Sequence. I must say I love its name...
